A dog grooming assistant is a person who works in the pet salon that works with a pet groomer to assist that person in routine aspects of bathing and conditioning dogs. The grooming assistant also works with the groomer to help calm or distract dogs during hair grooming and nail trimming.

The dog grooming assistant will typically prepare the pet for services by administering a bath. For bigger and more reluctant dogs, this may require other assistants to help calm or distract the animal. The grooming assistant typically applies a safe and canine-approved shampoo and soap to the dog's coat. At this point, the grooming assistant also inspects various areas on the dog for signs of skin irritation, flea activity, and ticks.
