Summer is one of the best times of the year to make memories with our pets. Whether you're heading to the beach, enjoying a backyard barbecue, taking a hike, or simply spending more time outdoors, your four-legged family members are excited to be part of the adventure.

But while we enjoy the sunshine, summer also brings unique challenges for our pets. High temperatures, hot pavement, increased exposure to fleas and ticks, and dehydration can quickly turn a fun day into a dangerous one.

Summer Pet Safety: Recognizing the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Summer pet safety starts with understanding how heat, humidity, hot pavement, and outdoor activities affect your dog's health. A few simple precautions can help your pet enjoy a fun and safe summer.

Dogs don't cool themselves the same way people do. Instead of sweating through their skin, they primarily cool down by panting. During extremely hot weather, that may not be enough.

Watch for these warning signs of overheating:

• Excessive panting

• Thick or excessive drooling

• Bright red or pale gums

• Weakness or difficulty walking

• Vomiting or diarrhea

• Confusion or disorientation

• Collapse

Heatstroke is a medical emergency. If your pet begins showing these symptoms, move them to a cool, shaded area immediately, offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water, and contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Hot Pavement Can Burn Sensitive Paw Pads

One of the most common summer hazards isn't the air temperature—it's the ground beneath your pet's feet.

Asphalt, sidewalks, parking lots, boat docks, and even beach sand can become much hotter than the surrounding air temperature and may cause painful burns within seconds.

A simple way to test the surface is the 7-Second Rule:

Place the back of your hand on the pavement or sand for seven seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pet's paws.

Whenever possible:

• Walk during the early morning or evening.

• Choose grassy paths instead of pavement.

• Allow pets to cool off frequently.

• Consider protective dog boots if spending extended time on hot surfaces.

For our Southport and Oak Island families, remember that beach sand can become extremely hot during the middle of the day, even when there's a nice ocean breeze.

Never Leave Your Pet in a Parked Vehicle

Even with the windows cracked, a parked vehicle can reach dangerous temperatures in just minutes.

Temperatures inside a vehicle can climb well over 120°F on a warm summer day, creating life-threatening conditions for pets.

If your destination doesn't allow pets inside, it's safest to leave them comfortably at home where it's cool.

Water Safety Is Just as Important

Many dogs love the water, but not every dog is a natural swimmer.

If you're boating, kayaking, or spending time near lakes or the ocean:

• Use a properly fitted canine life jacket.

• Never force a nervous dog into the water.

• Rinse saltwater or lake residue from your pet's coat after swimming.

• Always provide fresh drinking water to discourage drinking from lakes or the ocean.

After swimming, be sure to dry your pet thoroughly—especially around the ears—to help reduce the risk of skin irritation and ear infections.

Summer Grooming Helps Keep Pets Comfortable

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear during the summer is:

"Should I shave my dog to help keep them cool?"

The answer depends on your dog's breed and coat type.

Many double-coated breeds rely on their natural coat to help regulate body temperature and protect their skin from direct sunlight. Shaving these breeds isn't always the best option.

Professional grooming removes loose undercoat, reduces matting, improves airflow through the coat, and helps pets stay more comfortable without removing the coat's natural protection.

Warm weather creates ideal conditions for fleas and ticks.

After spending time outdoors:

• Check your pet's ears.

• Inspect between their toes.

• Look under the collar.

• Examine around the tail and belly.

Keep Your Pet Hydrated

Hydration is essential during the summer months.

Help your pet stay healthy by:

• Providing clean, fresh water throughout the day.

• Avoiding strenuous exercise during peak afternoon heat.

• Allowing frequent rest breaks during outdoor activities.
